The Problem with Waiting Time

8 - 9:15 a.m.
Presenter: William B. Nordgren, M.S., CIM

Popular management techniques such as Lean, Six Sigma, and many others have one goal: to reduce the waiting time, or waste, in a process. This presentation will discuss the problems and expenses associated with waiting time, including the following:

The tug of war between customer waiting time, product waiting time, and machine waiting time.

An experiment to demonstrate that waiting time exponentially increases as machine utilization increases.

A discussion of how discrete event simulation can help you understand the complex relationships in modern systems.

About the presenter: Bill Nordgren is the President and CEO of FlexSim Software Products, Inc. In 1988, he founded ProModel Corporation and was Vice President until he left in 1992. In 1993, Bill founded F&H Simulations, Inc. (now FlexSim Software Products, Inc.) and introduced Taylor II, Taylor ED, and FlexSim into the market. Bill has authored several papers dealing with simulation project management and queuing theory, co-wrote the textbook Applied Simulation: Modeling and Analysis using FlexSim, and has taught hundreds of classes in the use of simulation software.

Streamlining Time Studies, Line Balancing, Lean Analysis, Process Improvement and More

11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Presenter: Christina Demuth

Get your hands on and ask questions about the latest technology in video-based time studies, Lean task classification, and man-machine charting as well as automatic mixed model line balancing. You're invited to download ProTime Estimation and ProBalance from www.proplanner.com/download and bring your laptop to this session.

About the presenter: Christina Demuth has a background in industrial engineering and business. As an account manager at Proplanner, she provides support, implementation, training, and project management services to manufacturing companies for Proplanner's process management and in-plant logistics software. Working with customers to understand their current business processes and develop strategies to improve their production and layout planning practices is an integral part of her role at Proplanner. She currently helps support a wide range of clients who manufacture assembled products in the automotive, aerospace, military vehicle, consumer appliance, oil and gas, medical equipment, electronics and other industries.

Doing More with Less: Process Optimization with DOE and Simulation

2 - 3:15 p.m.
Presenter: Mia L. Stephens

In this talk we follow a Six Sigma team as they optimize the yield of a complex manufacturing process.  The team uses dynamic visualization tools to identify important variables, explore specification limits, and identify potential interactions.  They create a highly efficient optimal experiment, and use the results to simultaneously optimize four responses.  Finally, they use Monte Carlo simulation to estimate process capability at the optimal settings.

About the presenter: Mia L. Stephens is an Academic Ambassador with JMP, a division of SAS. Prior to joining SAS, she split her time between industrial consulting and teaching statistics at the University of New Hampshire. A co-author of Visual Six Sigma, Making Data Analysis Lean, she has worked with a variety of industries and with the federal government, developing training materials, teaching, and consulting in both manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments. Stephens holds an M.S. in Applied Statistics. She is currently located in York Harbor, Maine.

Creating Better Layouts, Faster

3:30 - 4:45 p.m.
Presenter: Christina Demuth

Learn about and discuss best practices in material flow analysis, layout planning, and tugger-route planning using Flow Planner software.  If you have AutoCAD, you can download and install Flow Planner from www.proplanner.com/download prior to this session.
