Computer and Information Systems Division
This division brings together members from academia, industry and government who share a common interest in topics related to research and practice of computer and information systems. The CIS division is primarily interested in the theory, methodology and practice in all technical areas that develop or apply CIS.
Dear IIE Computer & Information Systems (CIS) Division members,
This summer continued a strong showing by the CIS division
in terms of presentations and sessions at the annual Industrial & Systems
Engineering Research Conference (ISERC). There were 56 presentations in 17
sessions in this year, including a very well attended and received panel
discussion on the Internet of Things (IoT). CIS presence at the annual
conference, as well as our division membership, has been growing strongly for
over a decade now, and looks on course to continue this year with the help of
your contributions and collaboration in division activities! Read more.

Summary of 2015 IIE Annual Conference & Expo
The Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Annual Conference & Expo 2015 was held from May 30 to June 2, 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. John Jung-Woon Yoo from Bradley University and Gerry Knapp from Louisiana State University served as the chairs of the Computer and Information Systems (CIS) track of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC). Mehdi Khazaeli from University of Pacific and Sung Won Han from New York University served the Applied Solutions Conference as representatives from the CIS division. 56 presentations (32 invited presentations) in 17 sessions were made in the ISERC CIS track. The CIS track hosted a panel discussion session, entitled “Internet of Things (IoT): Opportunities for Industrial & Systems Engineering.” This session was selected as one of the highlighted sessions of the conference by the ISERC 2015 Program Co-Chairs. Call for Abstracts/Papers Deadline Nov. 22, 2015
The Computer & Information Systems Division of IIE is sponsoring the CIS Track at the 2016 Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC). The ISERC, which is part of the IIE Annual Conference and Expo, is a forum for exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the industrial and systems engineering research community. Click here for list of technical areas that CIS is interested in, important dates, and submission site.
CIS is also sponsoring some Applied Solutions sessions of the 2016 IIE Annual Conference. Applied Solutions sessions present proven solutions from applying industrial and systems engineering principles within industry, healthcare or service companies. IIE CIS Sponsored Webinar
The Computer and Information Systems division of IIE is pleased to announce an upcoming webinar on the Electric Vehicle. Dr. Young Jae Jang from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) will share his experience and insight on wireless charging electric vehicle in his talk entitled “Research Challenges and Opportunities in Wireless Charging Electric Vehicle.” The webinar will be held at 2PM (EST) on December 10, 2015. Information about the webinar and the speaker on the IIE webinar page. Please mark your calendar now and join the webinar. Hope to see you there!
One of the benefits of belonging to a professional society is the opportunity to share knowledge about various topics of interest.
Topic: Research Overview of Complex System Design and Analysis Laboratory
Sang Won Yoon, Assistant Professor, Systems Science and Industrial Engineering, State University of New York at Binghamton
Overview: Dr. Sang Won Yoon and his research team has been studying a variety of emerging research domains including 1) distributed decision making, coordination protocol design and collaborative control theory, 2) large-scale data analytics and predictive modeling, 3) mail-order pharmacy system design and analysis, 4) healthcare systems optimization, 5) production & manufacturing systems optimization, and 6) warehouse management and transportation. This research overview will outline a brief description of six research domains, followed by future research plans.
Topic: Visual sensing and Data Analytics
Mehdi Khazaeli, Assistant Professor, Engineering Management, University of the Pacific
Overview: Dr. Khazaeli and his research team at UOP are working on multimedia analysis and using contextual cueing to improve segmentation, scene detection and object recognition (Figure 1 presents a framework for visual sensing applications). This research will ultimately contribute to sport biomechanics, training environment and building information modelling.
