Operations Research Division
Members apply mathematics and sophisticated computer programs to solve engineering problems. Some members work in areas such as forecasting, statistical analysis and simulation. Operations Research News, an e-mail newsletter sent periodically to all members, includes articles on simulation developments and applications, and statistical process control as well as other points of interest.

The Operations Research Division of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) is once again sponsoring a track in the Applied Solutions sessions of the IIE Annual Conference and Expo 2014. Applied Solutions sessions present proven solutions from applying industrial and systems engineering principles within industry, healthcare or service companies. The Operations Research Track is seeking presentations in which operations research principles such as mathematical modeling, forecasting, statistical analysis and others have been applied to real world challenges within any industry. President elect and Board members elected
Maria Mayorga, associate professor, Clemson University, will serve as president-elect for the division. She has been a member of IIE and the Operations Research Division since 2006. Maria also served as member of the Operations Research Board of Directors 2010-2011, Best Paper selection committee 2011-2012 and Operations Research track co-chair for the 2011 IIE Industrial Engineering Research conference.
Elected to the Board of Directors to serve two-year terms: Dan Bumblauskas, assistant teaching professor, University of Missouri and John Dulin, continuous improvement manager, Enterprise Ventures Corp.
2013 OR Teaching Award
Annual Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research
Alex Savachkin of the University of South Florida is the recipient of the 2013 Operations Research Division Teaching Award. The award recognizes excellence in teaching operations research. The award was presented at the 2013 IIE Annual IE Conference and Expo in Orlando, Fla.
2013 ISERC Best Paper Award
Juan Ma and Baski Balasundaram, Oklahoma State University, were recipients of the 2013 Operations Research Division ISERC Best Paper Award. Their winning paper: "Solving Chance-constrained Spanning k-Core Problem via Decomposition and Integer Programming."
Operations Research Division mission
The mission of the division shall be to support its members by fostering networks, offering programs and maintaining resources that represent their core competencies and/or areas of specialized practice.
Operations Research Division goals
These five goals are essential to addressing IIE’s mission:
- Develop, maintain and disseminate a body of technical knowledge.
- Provide a forum for technical networking.
- Be perceived as the voice of the technical specialty.
- Collaborate with IIE to support the mission of the Institute, provide member value and promote the discipline.
- Work with the NLC to establish a set of metrics that track society and division activities.
The strength of IIE is in its members, who volunteer to serve on boards such as this.
