Scholarships and Fellowships
IIE’s scholarship and fellowship program is in place to recognize graduate and undergraduate industrial engineering students for academic excellence and campus leadership. The awards are valued up to $4,000.
IIE also offers honors and recognition specifically for graduate students, including the Graduate Research Award and the prestigious Pritsker Doctoral Dissertation Award.
2012-13 Scholarship and Fellowship Recipients
Eligibility
- Be active Institute members as reflected on or before your October chapter roster. New member applications must be completely processed prior to the end of September in order for students to be eligible (exception: IIE membership is not required for the John L. Imhoff Scholarship)
- Be enrolled full time in graduate or undergraduate industrial engineering programs
- Have an overall point-hour average of 3.40 on a scale of 0 - 4.00. Graduate students must have had a 3.40 average as undergraduates to qualify
- Must have a graduation date of May/June 2014 or later
Criteria
The nominee’s scholastic ability, character, leadership and potential service to the industrial engineering profession are all considered by the scholarship fund trustees when selecting the scholarship recipients.
Nominations
Students may not apply directly for any scholarships. They must be nominated by IE department heads or faculty advisor and nominations must be submitted to the Institute headquarters by Nov. 15. Scholarship nominations open Sept. 1.
Deadline exceptions:
Students will be sent an application package to complete and return to IIE. Applications must be postmarked on or before Feb. 1. This applies to all scholarships and fellowships except the John L. Imhoff and John S.W. Fargher scholarships. All scholarships and stipends are in US dollars.
Scholarships and Fellowships Description
The following is a brief description of the available scholarships and fellowships.
A.O. Putnam Memorial Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico, provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. Priority is given to students who have demonstrated an interest in management consulting. The endowment provided for one scholarship of $700 for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
C.B. Gambrell Undergraduate Scholarship. Available to undergraduate industrial engineering students who are U.S. citizens who have graduated from a U.S. high school and who currently have a class standing above the freshman level in an ABET accredited IE program. One scholarship of $600 was awarded for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
CIE Undergraduate Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate industrial engineering student for the best application of corporate social responsibility, resilience or sustainability principals aligned with classic industrial engineering techniques to a project for an enterprise. Interested candidates must complete an application form, as well as submit a complete description of the project, including provision of a financial analysis using the triple-bottom line definitions of sustainability, showing a positive cash flow or return on investment to the enterprise over the project life. The application must be accompanied by a letter of support from the sponsoring or subject enterprise. Applications and project write-ups are due Feb. 1, 2013. The successful candidate will receive a $2,000 award, as well as a $500 stipend to cover travel expenses and registration for the Annual Institute of Industrial Engineers Conference as it is the intent that the successful candidate will present their project case study at the conference. Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico, provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. Three scholarships of $3,000 each were awarded for past academic year. This is your nomination form.
E.J. Sierleja Memorial Fellowship. Available annually to a graduate student pursuing advanced studies in the area of transportation, with priority given to students focusing on rail transportation. The endowment provided for one fellowship of $700 for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
Gilbreth Memorial Fellowship. Available to graduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada and Mexico. The graduate student must be pursuing an advanced degree in industrial engineering or its equivalent. Two fellowships of $3,000 were awarded for this past academic year. This is your nomination form.
Harold and Inge Marcus Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States provided the school’s engineering program is accredited by an agency recognized by IIE and the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. This award is intended to recognize academic excellence and noteworthy contribution to the development of the industrial engineering profession. One scholarship of $1,000 was awarded this past academic year. This is your nomination form.
IIE Council of Fellows Undergraduate Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. This scholarship was created to reward outstanding academic scholarship and leadership at the undergraduate level. Two scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded for this past academic year. John S.W. Fargher Jr. Available to full-time graduate students enrolled in any school in the United States provided: (1) the school has an accredited program by an agency recognized by IIE in industrial engineering or engineering management. This award is intended to recognize academic excellence and noteworthy contribution to the development of the industrial engineering profession. This is your nomination form.
John L. Imhoff Scholarship. Available to a student pursuing an industrial engineering degree who, by academic, employment and/or professional achievements, has made noteworthy contributions to the development of the industrial engineering profession through international understanding. At least one scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded in the spring. Note that IIE membership is not required.
Candidates must:
- Be pursuing a B.S. in an accredited IE program; or
- Have a B.S. in IE and be pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree in an accredited IE program.
Application packets must include:
- A written essay describing candidate's international contributions to, or experience in, industrial engineering.
- An original transcript showing at least a 3.40 on a scale of 0 - 4.00 and full-time status.
- Three references reinforcing applicant's contributions to the industrial engineering profession through international understanding.

Lisa Zaken Award For Excellence. Available to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any school, and pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. This award is intended to recognize excellence in scholarly activities and leadership related to the industrial engineering profession on campus. One Award for Excellence was awarded in the amount of $700 for the past academic year. A candidate for this award must:
- Be active in a student chapter
- Have demonstrated leadership and promoted IIE involvement on campus
- Have an overall grade point average of 3.00 on a scale of 0 – 4.00
- Have at least one full year of school remaining from the date of nomination (November)

Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico, provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. Priority is given to students who have demonstrated an interest in work measurement and methods engineering. Two scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
Presidents Scholarship. The Presidents Scholarship is available to undergraduate students pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. This award is intended to recognize excellence in scholarly activities and leadership of the industrial engineering profession. A candidate must be active in a student chapter and must have demonstrated leadership and promoted IIE involvement on campus. One scholarship was awarded in the amount of $1,000. This is your nomination form.
Society for Health Systems Scholarship. Available to undergraduate students enrolled full-time in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada and Mexico, provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering and operations research with a definite interest in the area of healthcare. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000. A candidate for this award must:
- Be an active Society for Health Systems student member.
- Have an overall point-hour average of 3.00 on a scale of 0-4.00.
- Be enrolled full-time, as defined by the student's university.
Students may not apply directly for the scholarship. They must be nominated by IE department heads, IIE student chapter advisors, IE faculty or by SHS board members, SHS diplomates or SHS senior members. Applications must be received at IIE headquarters on or before Dec. 1 and include:
- A transcript and resume or CV including statement of career objective.
- Three letters of recommendation reinforcing applicant's contributions to the industrial engineering profession in healthcare.
- Statement of Interest in Healthcare describing candidate's contributions to, or experience in, industrial engineering in healthcare.
- A three to five page original essay supporting the theme "IEs in Healthcare: Improving Processes in Healthcare."

UPS Scholarship for Female Students. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico, (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. Most recently, one scholarship of $4,000 was awarded for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
UPS Scholarship for Minority Students. Available to undergraduate students enrolled in any school in the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico, provided: (1) the school’s industrial engineering program or equivalent is accredited by an agency or organization recognized by IIE; and (2) the student is pursuing a course of study in industrial engineering. One scholarship of $4,000 was awarded for the past academic year. This is your nomination form.
