Dr. Craig Downing

Dr. Craig Downing is the interim department head for Engineering Management and an associate professor of engineering management at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He leads activities and responsibilities for Continuing & Professional Studies, the academic outreach efforts supporting professional and practicing engineers in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

Downing received his B.S. in mechanical engineering technology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a B.S. in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University. He received his M.S. in manufacturing systems and his doctorate in workforce education and development from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

He has as nearly two decades of experience teaching Manufacturing, Management, and Mathematics at the post-secondary level. Additionally, he has amassed more than 10 years of industrial experience, four years as a process engineer and the rest as a private consultant for organizations including Lockheed Martin/NASA, Parker Hannifin, Peerless Pumps, and Crain Enterprises. His interests are rooted in industrial-academic relationships, quality management system development, and production/operations management. Downing is a lean Six Sigma master black belt.

In addition to pursuing industrial-academic relationships, Downing serves as a subject matter expert (SME) for three academic publishing companies. His focal areas are engineering statistics, industrial/manufacturing engineering and Six Sigma.  He provides instructional support for effectively transitioning traditional print material to the online environment.  In performing this function he screens for content accuracy and electronic functionality. Most recently he was asked to serve on the Advisory Board for McGraw Hill’s Access Engineering platform.

Downing attempts to publish and present one or more engineering management-related conference proceedings during the annual conferences of ASEE, ASEM, FIE and IIE. This year he has four articles under consideration.

He is an active member of SEMS, supporting the society by acting as a Session chair at the annual conference in Cancun, Mexico, in 2010; in Reno, Nev., in 2011; and will do so again this year in Orlando, Fla. In addition, he is a member of the Student Best Student Paper Competition Committee and the Content Committee for 2011 and 2012.

Downing’s local community service includes: being a minority engineering mentor, tutor, and program assistant (Indianapolis and Terre Haute); an assistant coach for summer/fall Tee-ball league (Indianapolis) and an assistant golf instructor for various summer golf camps (First-Tee, Hook-a-Kid on Golf, etc.)
