ERROR OF THE FIRST KIND. The error committed in rejecting the null hypothesis (because the statistic takes a value within the critical region), when the null hypothesis is true. Note: This is often referred to as a type 1 error. [1: 2.75] ERROR OF THE SECOND KIND. The error of not rejecting (accepting) the null hypothesis (because the value of the statistic falls outside the critical region), when the null hypothesis is not true. The operation of assigning, from the observations in a sample, numerical values to the parameters of a distribution chosen as the statistical model of the population from which this sample is taken.
