Taichi Ohno, the famous pioneer of the Toyota Production System, says, “All we are doing is looking at the timeline from the moment the customer gives us an order to the point at which we collect the cash. And we are reducing the timeline by reducing the non-value-adding wastes.” The true focus, therefore, is lead-time reduction. This is a unique workshop that will drive creative thinking outside of traditional engineering approaches. Participants will be challenged with case study scenarios for utilizing lean Six Sigma principles to engineering lean supply chains, with the goal of minimizing the total cost of fulfillment. Rapid Process Improvement with Object-Oriented Simulation

This one-day course provides a fast start to using simulation, rapid modeling and 3-D animation capability to solve real problems effectively. We start with a brief overview of simulation technology, its appropriate use and a modeling framework. Then we use a predefined object library to solve a variety of problems exploring the ease-of-use and power of objects. Next we learn how objects can interact to provide improved model accuracy and flexibility. We end with an overview of ways to represent and work with model input data and interpret simulation results. The day will be peppered with anecdotes and success tips from a 30-year veteran in simulation. David T. Sturrock is co-founder and vice president of operations for Simio LLC. He is responsible for development and services for Simio simulation and scheduling products. In that role, he not only manages new product development, but also teaches frequent commercial courses and manages a variety of consulting projects. He also teaches simulation classes as a field faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh. With over 30 years of experience, he has applied simulation techniques in the areas of manufacturing, transportation systems, scheduling, high-speed processing, plant layout, business processes, call centers, capacity analysis, process design, healthcare, plant commissioning and real-time control. He received his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from The Pennsylvania State University with concentrations in manufacturing and automation.
