What's your HEPI?
Times have changed, yet I think we grossly underestimate the degree of daily change and its impact on our ability to reduce process variation and optimize process performance. Only recently have I begun to appreciate the real magnitude of such changes, which go beyond new technology and changes in social norms.

Game change?
In recent years, the labor picture has become brighter for those seeking permanent jobs. While large employers continue to recruit at colleges and universities and then invest large sums to develop these new staff members, most companies hire experienced employees who can add value on day one.

Health Systems by William "Ike" Eisenhauer

Everything possible means nothing useful
Healthcare is complex; healthcare is complicated; healthcare is a system of systems on a scale beyond the imagination of most participants. One way we deal with complicated systems is to attempt to understand them, to determine leverage points, to figure out what makes them tick. Engineers do this through models. What we don’t do, at least what we shouldn’t do, is try to model everything perfectly.

Common sense for optimization
The world of manufacturing has constant tension between documentation that is succinct and readable and documentation that is complete and comprehensive. What often starts as succinct ends up comprehensive (and often useless). I have asked operators, technicians and even engineers why they ignored or subverted the intent of a process or document. They often answer, "The documentation didn’t tell me what to do."

System science at IIT Jodhpur
My recent travels to India pro-vided me with the opportunity to speak at the 37th National Systems Conference at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur, located in the state of Rajasthan in the northwest part of the country. My trip led me to three observations about education in India and the link between systems science and systems engineering.
