The day we strive for
Shipboard network quality engineer
I am a shipboard network quality engineer for BAE Systems. I deal specifically with installing integrated shipboard network systems and combat systems hardware. I ensure that all work done for information technology systems and combat systems equipment meets or exceeds ISO 9000 and ISO 9001, as well as more specific standards set forth by both international quality standards and naval quality standards. I’m also responsible for testing these systems to ensure full operability and functionality.
BAE Systems is a premier global defense, security and aerospace company that delivers a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, IT solutions and customer support services.
The best part of my job is the interaction with the ship’s crew members during the course of the construction phase as they begin exploring their new ship. The pride you see every day as crew members walk their ship makes me proud to be in this industry supporting our armed services.
My perfect day would begin with checking my email for any updates on system installs that require a quality assessment. I would follow this by spending a few hours on the ship, checking the progress of any number of different systems. Whether finished or incomplete, I would write up a report of my ship checks to be turned over to my superiors, both independent contractors and government officials. The latter part of the day would be spent running tests on different equipment that previously had finished the installation phase. This would immediately be followed by interaction with crew members to hammer out details of changes they would prefer on the customization for either a personal touch or to increase their working capabilities and comfort.
I’m currently attending Drexel University’s College of Professional Studies in pursuit of a Master of Science in project management. It is my hope that this degree will lead to my project management professional certificate and a role as a prominent project engineer for BAE Systems.
