Innovations in Curriculum Competition

Now in its eighth year, this event highlights outstanding innovation in the design or presentation of an accredited IE, ISE, IEOR, or similar engineering curriculum, or in a course that is part of an accredited curriculum. It recognizes faculty members who demonstrate outstanding creativity in instructional approaches or curriculum organization, design, or content, and who provide evidence of the effectiveness of their innovation.

The IIE Council of Industrial Engineering Academic Department Heads (CIEADH).

Eligibility:

Any person or team with course or program level responsibility in an IE, ISE, IEOR, or similar curriculum. Applicants may be full-time or part-time faculty and non-IIE members may apply. Applicants must agree to make a presentation describing the innovation at the ISERC portion of the IIE Annual Conference & Expo.

Criteria:

  • Applicants for the award must have demonstrated, through successful implementation, a significant innovation in industrial engineering education. The innovation must have been used in teaching or implemented in curriculum for at least two presentations of a course, or two years of a curriculum.
  • No more than one winner is selected per year.
  • The innovation may involve an undergraduate or graduate course, series of courses, or curriculum. Selection criteria include creativity, effectiveness, impact on meeting the changing needs of the industrial engineering profession, and potential for widespread adoption.

Application process:

In addition to the application form, the applicant should include a document of not more than seven (7) pages which addresses the criteria above and includes:

  • A description of the innovation, including the topic or problem, the intended audience, the objectives of the innovation, and the approach taken.
  • The innovative and unique features of the approach, including but not limited to creativity with respect to content, organization of material, and/or presentation.
  • Impact on meeting the changing needs of the IE profession, indicating the degree to which the innovation supports preparation for new IE roles and expectations.
  • Documented effectiveness and specific benefits of the innovation, indicating how objectives were met, the number of students with whom the approach has been used, benefits derived from the innovation, and how they were measured.
  • Transferability and potential for widespread adoption, explaining the resources required and how the innovation could be used by other institutions, professors, or courses.
  • The application should be accompanied by a letter from the applicant’s (or applicants’) department chair indicating support for the nomination.
