Tayfur Altiok, Ph.D., an IIE fellow and a professor of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Rutgers University, passed away on April 14, 2012, after a sudden illness.
"This is a great loss to the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rutgers University and the broader IE community," said Hoang Pham, professor and department chair, in a statement on the Rutgers website.
Altiok was a professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and director of the Laboratory for Port Security at Rutgers. His research and teaching activities have been in the areas of queueing systems, risk analysis and simulation modeling with applications to maritime transportation in ports and waterways, port security/safety, capacity planning and design of manufacturing systems and supply chains.
His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, New Jersey Department of Transportation, Department of Homeland Security, Rutgers Academic Excellence Fund and various industries for a number of years.
Altiok received his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1982 and was a Fulbright recipient. He also published two books in the areas of simulation modeling and performance analysis of manufacturing systems.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
