Annual workshop helps universities with accreditation process
The IIE Accreditation Advisory Council again will sponsor a workshop at Annual Conference and Expo 2013 to help industrial engineering and industrial engineering technology department chairs and assessment coordinators prepare for upcoming ABET accreditation visits. It will focus on assembling documentation and making arrangements in advance of an accreditation visit, with a specific emphasis on industrial engineering program criteria.

The session can accommodate up to 40 people, and pre-registration is required. To pre-register, email Bonnie Cameron at bcameron@iienet.org.

In the United States, accreditation is a nongovernmental, peer-reviewed process that ensures educational quality. Educational institutions volunteer to undergo periodic review to determine if certain criteria are being met. Accreditation is not a ranking system. It is assurance that a program or institution meets established quality standards.

Why is accreditation important?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a college program. One of the most important is whether that program is accredited. Accreditation assures that a program has met certain quality standards. To employers, graduate schools, and licensure and certification boards, graduation from an accredited program signifies adequate preparation for entry into the profession. In fact, most of these groups require graduation from an accredited program as a minimum qualification.

Accreditation helps many people make important decisions about education:

• Students choosing an educational program
• Parents seeking assurance of a quality education
• Institutions seeking to improve the education provided by their programs
• Employers recruiting well-prepared graduates
